Eku Friday!!

It’s Friday, and you know how we love Fridays on the blog! 😀

Introduce you!

Hi I’m VeCoya. I work a 9-5 yay I’m a full blown adult lol. I’m from North Carolina but currently reside in Maryland.

When did you go natural and how did you do it?

I received my last relaxer in January of 2009. I went the natural route because my hair was breaking off due to excessive heat damage. I was using the flat iron entirely too much, I’m talking almost daily WITHOUT A HEAT PROTECTANT! I was sooooo CLUELESS at the time but hey you live and you learn. Through the transition process, I was surprised and intrigued by my natural curls. Thanks to Youtube videos and natural hair sites like Protecting your Crown and Glory and CurlyNikki, I began to learn how to care for my own hair. I transitioned for a little over a year because I wanted to get to know my new hair and I cut off my relaxed ends in February 2010.

Tell us about your hair

My hair is complex, I have looser curls on the left side and the right side ALWAYS outgrows the left side despite me cutting it even! It’s wavy in the front and curly in the back. It’s soft, unruly at times, thick, beautiful, sometimes at work I have to sit on my hands in order to stop playing in it but I embrace it all! Perfectly flawed, but I LOVE my hair for that. After all, what on God’s green earth is perfect?

In terms of length its past my shoulders and almost bra strap length (I got about an inch or two left to go).

How do you take care of your hair?

I co-wash my hair once a week & I deep condition once a month. I rock a lot of protective styles, but in general I try to listen to my hair (when I say listen I mean run my fingers through my hair you can tell a lot about your hair by the way it feels) & I try to treat her right.

I’m a product junkie! It’s so gotten bad that I don’t allow myself to go to the beauty supply store anymore lol. But if I were on a deserted island and could only have two products I would choose Coconut oil and Jane Carter Solution Leave In Revitalizing Conditioner. I use both daily and they are full of fortifying and natural ingredients.

How do you wear your hair?

I wear my hair in all different sorts of ways. I love variety so I rock it in flexis, straw sets, buns, I braid and twist it back into protective styles. I flat iron it every once in a while. I love that natural hair is so diverse.

I haven’t really come across too many hair styles that I can’t rock. Of course, I’ve had my share of new hairstyles gone wrong, for instance bantu knots & two strand twists. But I’m a firm believer of dusting myself off and trying again whenever my hair doesn’t turn out the way that I intended it to, and that philosophy has not failed me yet.

If I had to choose a favorite style I think it would be the bun though, it’s an easy go to protective style. Plus, my sister showed me this awesome technique to make your bun appear much fuller than it actually is lol.

Natural Hair Journey.

How did your family and friends react? Do you get any negative comments?

In general I’ve always been relatively happy with my hair. As I stated before my reason for going natural was hair breakage. People will say ignorant things every once and while but at the end of the day I have to be confident with the way that I rock my tresses.

I didn’t go natural for any one person so I refuse to allow their comments to sway how I view myself. My family was super supportive.

Any challenges?

My current challenge is realizing that the more hair I have, the more patience I need to deal with it lol.

Any last words?

It’s been my experience that natural hair isn’t easier to deal. Rewarding? YES! Time consuming? YES! But easier to deal with than relaxed hair? NO! It takes time and effort to love and care for your hair. But its just like anything else in life you have to take the good with the bad. I love my hair and I’m thankful for it!
