Hairspiration! : Wolfgang

Hey guys!

Have you missed Hairspiration?

I know I have. And this Friday is different.

I am very happy to introduce you to our newest natural hair inspiration on the blog, Wolfgang! 🙂

Tell us about you!

Well, for starters my name is Wolfgang Lisborg from Denmark, Europe- a natural hair enthusiast trying to be a voice for natural males. I’m a fashion/portrait photographer who also enjoys freestyle dancing a lot. Currently, residing in Greensboro, NC. Oh yeah, I’m a sucker for natural girls who really know how to carry themselves.

As a guy, you’ve probably been natural your whole life. Right? When did you decide to grow out your hair? What inspired you to do so?

Yes indeed I’ve been natural since day one coming into this world.

I’ve been trying to grow my hair for a long time. From my years living with my aunt who is a hair stylist in Maryland, She always had the barber cut my hair whenever it was turning into a mini fro. Moving from uncle to aunt and then finally, my father’s place. I decided to grow it about 4 times.

I went through 3 big chops and now I’ve finally got my hair looking how I’ve always wanted it to be.

Honestly, my mother was the one who I was inspired by mostly. She had the pulled back fine hair with the bun. No matter what, it always looked classy and representing her character.

Tell us about your mane. Does he/she/it have a name? How many years have you been growing?

Man this mane of mine has always been trying to reach lengths since, I noticed a long time ago I actually have good hair. I have thought about a name but, nothing really comes to mind. People usually just say I look like a caveman or a wolf. This mane is finally 2 years and 9 months old now, it’s crazy how I’m saying this as if it’s my child. Lol!

Let’s talk hair care!

Are you a less-is-more person when it comes to your hair or do you go all out?

I’m more of a person to the max. I go all the way to express my naturalness. It’s my way of showing people my character as an individual.

Do you follow a regimen?

For this crazy mane of mine, I do. Since, my hair does not do well with not being washed (it becomes itchy), I wash everyday with conditioner or every other day if I get lazy. If by chance I’ve been working out a lot that day I’ll wash with shampoo.

As I wash my hair, I brush through it with a vent brush to manage my hair easier. Once done with that I do one of two things:

  1. I’ll put moisturizing oil in my hair for shine and for my hair to quench it’s thirst and hunger since it gets dry easily . Then I do a ponytail while brushing the ponytail and consistently banding my hair maybe half an inch apart until I reach the end.
  2. Or I simply put in a bun while applying moisturizing oil to the ends. So, when I open it for a blowout look using no heat it’ll look shiny and smooth.

What are your staple products?

These are my main products at the moment and will be for a while too:

Cococare Moisturizing Coconut Oil, Tresemme “Climate Protection” Condtioner, Tresemme “Breakage Defense” Shampoo, Tresemme Flawless Curls – “Curl Care”, Tresemme Tres Mousse – “Extra Firm Control”, and something new I’m going to be transitioning to called “ORS – Hairepair Vital Oils with Grapeseed/Sweet Almond Oils.

Shrinkage and you. Do you fight it or have you embraced it?

Lord, have mercy, shrinkage is simply a mess honestly. See it’s usually due to my shrinkage that I say I have no hair while everyone says I do. But, I’ve learned to love it seriously. Mainly, because to me it’s a protective style itself it actually retains all the moisturizing oil keeping my hair shiny and thick.

Your hair is long! Any tips for length retention? 😉

Some of you will say I’m crazy but, leaving your hair in its natural state while still applying your oils/mousse/butter/etc can definitely retain length. Mainly, because reducing the amount of stress pulling your hair back will, in a way allow it to rest without it breaking due to excessive tight hair styles.

Lastly, the less heat applied to your hair, the stronger your hair will turn out in my opinion.

Tell us two things Wolfgang’s hair cannot do without

My hair cannot do without being washed frequently, nor can it deal with not being fed. It’s like a kid as it gets bigger.

Does your hair have any dislikes?

Oh yes! Gel is my hair’s worst enemy. And flakes of dandruff, those days my goodness. My hair was honestly chappy back then, “literally” I needed hair balm for real. The struggle was real I was snowin’ in class thinking it was normal. My hair despises not being washed and not being fed. Now, that I think about it my mane is acts stubborn as I did as a pre-teen.

How do you like to wear your hair?

I love wearing my hair in a no heat blow out form. I just love love love shaking my head. Also, having it in a bun the way I do it is fun to. If I feel like being me I wear it naturally how it is. Or rock out my hair in the Native American style, I was so amped when I figured I had enough hair to do it.

Are you facing any hair challenges right now or bad habits you’re trying to break?

Hmmmmm, yes kind of. Times when I would want to have my hair to be in a protective style I tend to act lazy. Then when it comes time to wash and brush through it, my knots become my worst enemy faced with on my own head. The struggles I had looking my hair come out. Sad sad sad moments, lol!

What is your hair to you?

This hair that I have been born with and been growing up with, is an extension of my culture and character the builds as it continues grow. My hair isn’t something I would to call a trend, it’s more of representation of how uniquely we all have been created.

Have you received any negativity from others towards your hair? How did/do you deal?

Awkwardly, I have for some reason from a few people. The thing that surprised me most was how negative some people were towards me “having hair” and simply “expressing it”. My thing is this: it takes a man and a woman to make a child, right? Chances are you’ll get a boy or girl. They both are “naturally” born with hair, ok! A girl is most likely going to grow hers out just because. And the boy can too.

Dealing with it: I just remind them that bashing or discriminating me by expressing what I’m “naturally” born with, the race I’m “naturally” born into, and the complexion I’ve been “naturally” given. Just lets me know your no better than the people who have been racial towards us (Africans) since day 1. Just saying, despising someone of something their naturally/uniquely born with just shows me some people haven’t looked in the mirror to accept themselves and the culture they’ve been brought in.

Have you experienced any peculiar difficulties because you’re a man growing out your hair?

Yes, mainly the acceptance of older females not just ones who went through the epic times of racism but the mid-aged women as well. Surprisingly, some guys even find it unnecessary, kinda shows me how much black folk embrace their roots or even one another.

What are your thoughts on longer hair for men in the formal workspace?

Truthfully, I really don’t believe it should be an issue in any way at all. I personally believe it’s a good thing to have since it’ll bring overall character to the work environment. I mean come on who would wanna work in an environment where everyone can’t naturally show off some part of who they are or culture.

Do you have any hair goals- short or long term?

Short term goal: Increase the overall strength of my hair, want it to have a larger bounce movement without it being in blowout form.

Long term goal: Is for my hair to be in its natural state laying on my shoulders without it being blown out.

Before you go, share 3 things you’ve tried & tested in your journey so far and hold to be the truth for your hair.

  1. If by any chance you have hair like myself (it dries fast and sometimes your ends look dead/chappy) Start using moisturizing oil on ends and bun it up so it can fully absorb the oil, to prevent dryness.
  2. Please don’t feel too tempted when you see products that look interesting. The necessary products you need will do just fine, instead of things want that may mess up your hair.
  3. Lastly, if you want your hair to grow fast forget about it and focus on life. As you grow in life so will your hair.

Any last words to anyone considering to go natural or a new natural?

For anyone who wishes to embrace what’s rightfully yours on top of your head. I highly suggest that what your peers, society, and media have to say about your hair needs to go straight out of your mind, soul, and head because it shouldn’t matter what they feel about your roots. You represent your culture and make them understand that you come from something strong, and you’re not to be altered to their preference.

Do you have a blog, twitter, instagram or any other social media you’d like people to connect with you on?
