Product Review: Organics Hair Mayonnaise

Hey guys!

Today I’m reviewing a product you’ve most likely seen before (if you live in Nigeria, that is). Organics Hair Mayonnaise isn’t hard to find. I got a tub in January at Enumex Cosmetics here in Calabar, for 800 naira.

Ingredients:

Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Dicetyldimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-32, Lanolin Oil, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Olea Europeaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, DMDM Hydantoin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Phenyl Trimethicone, Parfum (Fragrance), Dimethicone PEG-8 Laureate, Origanum Vulgare (Oregano) Leaf, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot)Seed Oil, Cholesterol, Soluble Collagen, Tocopherol, Ovum (Egg Powder), Panthenol, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, CI 19140 (Yellow 5), CI 42090 (Blue 1), CI 16035 (Red 40), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Equisetum Hiemale (Horsetail) Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract.

Worth noting:

  • Water is the first ingredient.
  • The alcohols on the list are the good kind. They are fatty, non-drying alcohols.
  • Silicones!!
  • This DC has humectants, Glycerin and Panthenol, they help moisturise.
  • The protein in this is way down the list, so if you’re in need of a stronger protein treatment, I think you’d have to beef this up a little, add more to it.
  • Mineral oil is listed as the third ingredient. The first five ingredients are deal breakers for me when I’m reading a product label. I don’t think I’d have ever put this product anywhere near my hair if not for the fact that my hair was steamed with this at a natural hair salon last year.

This isn’t to say that you should let anyone put anything in your hair at a salon, even a so-called natural hair salon, definitely not. I saw it with my side-eye, I was aware it had mineral oil but my hair was being absolutely frustrating. I DESPERATELY NEEDED someone to Olivia Pope my fro so I took a risk and let them do their thing. And I didn’t die.

That day my hair was actually behaving like iron sponge. It was so bad that the lady that did my hair gave me a mini moisturise & seal lecture on my way out lol there was really no point saying “I know.”

Now, after my hair was steamed with this DC, I can say it was the equivalent of a battery pull for me that day. I never hesperred it. I mean, mineral oil? One of the big bad guys is heavy in this mix and my hair liked it? Wow.

So in January before my Nothing But Intense Healing Mask arrived, I got myself a tub, which has since finished.

First, What My Hair Is Like:

My hair is super kinky, tightly coiled 4c hair. My strands are super fine (very thin), but together, they are quite dense. For about a year now, my hair has been responding well to products. On average, I need to moisturise with a leave-in conditioner once or twice a week.

My thoughts:

  1. Good slip for detangling
  2. I don’t like the smell though.
  3. Hair feels soft and well conditioned after use
  4. 15 oz (426g) for 800naira! ($5)
  5. I think the Intense Healing Mask is definitely a better DC, but this works, guys!
  6. Still, I can’t lie. It’s good to know that I have something cheap and easily accessible that works
  7. BUT I deep condition every week when my hair is out. I’m concerned about build-up, and I’m not comfortable having mineral oil in my hair especially right after I’ve cleansed/clarified. So if (unlike me) you prefer to Deep condition before you shampoo, I don’t think you need to worry about this particular point.

I had this review on my mind for a while but I was a little reluctant putting this out, because of the mineral oil in this. Mineral oil has a bad name in natural hair care and it’s actually hard to defend it. A very bad experience with mineral oil (on my skin) was one of the things that made me very passionate about knowing what I’m putting in my hair and in my body, but that’s a story for another day. 🙂

I was inspired by an email from my new friend, Alberta (who also happens to be my birthday mate ^_^), she likes a product with mineral oil, and was feeling a little guilty about it lol. After talking with her, I decided I’d go on to share anyway. No need to police myself, after all, I promised to share the good, the bad, the embarrassing and the absolutely confusing. 🙂

*Katy Perry voice* My hair kissed something with mineral oil and she liked it!! ( ._.) I’m still wary of mineral oil sha. Maybe we’ll address this soon.

My roommate uses this on a more regular basis. Organics Hair Mayonnaise can also be used for co-washing and as a leave-in. She doesn’t think it’s all that sha. Regular use of this DC (with no heat) since her big chop hasn’t resulted in noticeably softer hair.

Have you tried this deep conditioner? Are there any products you like that have mineral oil in them? Where do you stand?

Love,

AB,

xx

  1. Before I ever discovered the online hair community and learning so much, I had already reached a turning point where I stopped everything but shampoo, conditioner and olive oil and the difference was amazing.
My hair made it pretty obvious that stuff with petroleum jelly and mineral oil were enemies.
My hair has come a long way since so I don’t know how it’ll react to those things now if used differently. I’m not brave enough to try but if it works for someone else, by all means give your hair what it wants.

I was told that the Nothing but Intense Healing Mask can be found at Grandsquare.
For natural hair products, you can go to Perfect Trust Cosmetics. The address is on the Where to Find page.

And scroll down to the end of the page to read one of the last comments (Tola’s comment) for more locations.

  3. hello AB, although I have been natural since December 2012, I am still a bit new to the natural hair care regimen. I co-washed my hair today and then did a DIY Dc. my hair shrunk ao much that I didnt believe it. but that is not the issue for me. I noticed that my hair got tangled into knots at the tips so bad that I had to uproot them and maybe tore out some hair. I would not want this to happen on my next Dc. I think I have a fine textured type 4C hair. any insights on what the problem could be that’s causing the knots? Thank you

    • Hey Funmi!

I’m a fellow fine textured 4C girl, and the very nature of our strands (the thinness and super coiliness) makes us the most prone to those annoying fairy/ single strand knots.

To avoid these knots, I like to keep my hair stretched. Stretched in twists, corn rows, stretched with thread, just stretched. When applying product to your hair, try to stretch your hair by gently pulling it for more length to smooth the product through it (This is not supposed to hurt) It also helps to wash hair in big twists so the strands don’t tangle and knot. I don’t know if it’s possible to live a kinky-coily life without any knots at all, but by stretching, I’ve managed to reduce them by a lot.

Here’s this very helpful article explaining 4 more ways to prevent SSKs: http://blackgirllonghair.com/2012/03/fairy-knots-cures-and-prevention/

      I hope this helps

      • I was going around looking for the ORS hair mayo and found none at all. I finally saw this in one shop and was skeptical.about buying it. So thank you so much for the review

  4. I use an anti-dandruff shampoo which contains sulfates to wash my hair atleast every two weeks and I don’t co-wash because of that I’m not strict as to the no mineral oil or cone rules and my hair is still striving excellently. However, months that I use my sulfate free shampoo I try to avoid using them. I just advice people who stictly follow the no poo method or use a sulfate-free shampoo to try to avoid it.

  5. One of the first DCs I was able to get my hands on as a newly natural and I loved it. Mineral oil or not this stuff works in 4c hair! If you have 4C hair you know you can’t be super duper picky of every single ingredient – if it works be grateful and keep it moving!

  6. The funny thing is I bought this Hair Mayonnaise in Feb and since then put it at the back of my bathroom closet. But your post made me bring it out again, thanks so much for your review. I’m gonna use it this week and see how it goes!

  7. I’ve knowingly used about 3 products with mineral oil since going natural. Sometimes you have to rebel and try the things labelled as bad in order to find what your hair likes. That’s how I found out my hair doesn’t mind sillicones. I liked Taliah Waajid’s Curly Curl Cream eventhough it had mineral oil(However, I think the formula has been revised)

  8. I think mineral oil gets an unfair rap in the natural hair community. It’s actually a really effective emollient. Just like glycerin is a really effective humectant. If you have especially low porosity hair, it’s likely your hair will like both of these products. My mother used to use this DC on my hair when I was younger and I purchased a small tub a couple years ago since finding it at one location in the States and it still works.

  9. I’m using this DC right now but I don’t think it does much for me. That could be cos I have absolutely NO idea what works and what doesn’t for my hair. I’m horrible lyk that.
Please what stores in lag or ilorin can I get the intense healing mask? I’d like to try it.

  10. I bought a tub some day ago. Used it as a dc/leave-in. It left my hair soft-forreal o-and sheeny. I didnt feel the need to put in any oils even tho i know i should. Where i live? There are more relaxed heads than naturals, so i take what i can get. No super huge stores for miles and miles, i mean, living in the north with the huge land mass? There’s this small black spots in it i don’t understand tho. And plus, the last time i used it? Without heat tho, when i washed? My hair shrunk like…wow, so much. Im 4a-back of my head, 4c-middle, 4b in front.
