Hairspiration! : Chiamaka

Tell us about you!

I’m Chiamaka Okoro but popularly called “MAKAS” by friends, a law graduate and currently doing a professional post graduate course in Abuja,Nigeria. A lover of everything natural!

Have you always been natural?

I went natural for religious reasons, I decided I wasn’t going to relax my hair again. So before my big chop in June 2012 I had transitioned for some months and after my big chop I rocked my TWA for nine months, this was because I didn’t know what to do with my hair. I was so clueless that natural hair could make any sense, but I cared less of what people thought cause being concerned with their opinion was the exact reason I relaxed my hair sometime in 2008 after which my hair stopped growing and I lost considerable length.

Going natural, a friend gave me few hints on how to take care of my hair after which Google and YouTube became my besties and I became greater than my teacher, LOL

Tell us about your hair! Does she have a name? how does she feel? How would you classify her if you had to?

Sorry ooo don’t know much about this hair science ish, but my hair is 4C. The name thing doesn’t freak me so no name for my baby. My hair is soft and curly though not as much as I would want.

How do you care for your hair? Do you have a regimen? Any staple products?

First of all I love natural products! I deep condition my hair once in 3 or 4 weeks with a mixture of egg, avocado pear, honey, mayonnaise, coconut milk, alma powder (use of these products is not constant though, could vary depending on the availability of any of the products) then wash out with home made Dudu-Osun shampoo, after which I condition with Vinox hair conditioner and then apply my sheamix (mixture of sheabutter, olive oil, avocado oil, castor oil) to the roots of my hair and do my African threading to prevent shrinkage.

What are the things your hair cannot do without?

Sheabutter and water.

What have you realised your hair doesn’t like at all at all?

Too much manipulation.

How do you like to wear your hair?

I often wear my hair on protective styles especially yarn braids, yarn twists and yarn locs, yea I’m a yarn lover! When my protective styles are down I rock my natural hair for a week or two…My go-to hairstyle is the “BUN” cause it’s easy, I do twist-outs too.

How do you feel about shrinkage? Do you fight it? Do you embrace it?

Shrinkage was one big challenge for me but I’ve come to embrace it anyways. However I hardly let my hair shrink, after washing I do my African threading to prevent shrinkage.

Have you received any negativity from others towards your hair? How did/do you deal?

I have oh, from the day I cut my hair, but since it was a conscious decision I took without anybody’s permission I care less of what people say and surprisingly most people that talked ill about it now love it morethan I do and some of then have joined the league #SoulWinner! Lol

Are you facing any hair challenges right now or bad habits you’re trying to break?

Whenever my hair is out I touch it a lot…so much manipulation and this is one of the reasons I hide it in a protective style.

If you had one hair regret, it would be…

…Ever relaxing my hair the time I did, by now my waist length should have been here, lol!

Do you have a hair philosophy? What principles are you determined to live by on this hair journey?

One principle: people have their opinions and are bound to talk, remain natural anyway!

What is hair to you? Has going natural changed anything about you?

Hair is the beauty and glory of a woman. Going natural boosted my self confidence, it helped me accept myself and not seek the validation of others.

Do you have any hair goals- short or long term?

My one goal is to achieve waist length, with the human eye it seems impossible, but “I BELIEVE” and “YES I CAN”

PhotoGrid_1424717175160Any last words to anyone considering to go natural or a new natural?

Please hurry, there’s Joy in it and most importantly it builds Self confidence/esteem…people may cajole you but with time they’ll accept your decision and even join you!

Where on the internet can you be found?

Twitter-@glitzymakas (not constant though cause of academic work)
