Aaaaand it’s a wrap!
Ladies (and gentlemen), we have come to the end of the ‘So You Want To Blog’ series! Dear newbie blogger, dear person who has been thinking about starting a blog but has been putting it off for months, years, for whatever reasons you think are valid (but really aren’t), I especially wrote this series for you!
Here’s what we have covered since we started:
- So You Want To Blog? DO IT: The Right Mindset
- Choosing The Best Blogging Platform For You
- Blogging: Ground rules & Etiquette
- No DSLR, How To Create Great Images For Your Blog
- Be Seen! : How To Put Your Blog Out There
I have been blogging actively for about 3 years, so in these posts, I have tried really hard to summarise “the koko”, the basics I think you should know. I hope this has been helpful, I hope I’ve been able to teach you something new, and supply the vim, the ginger, the encouragement you need to start blogging.
As we close today, I just want to share more reasons why I want you to blog:
To Connect. Be Connected. Find Your Tribe.
I love blogging.
I love connecting with people. I love that there’s nothing in this world- nothing, nothing you can’t find a blog about. There is something for every random thing you could think of.
This should tell you that, there’s space for you. There’s space for all of us to express ourselves, to share our interests. There’s you, and there are people like you, you will find your tribe.
Contribute to Society.
What is your goal right now? Why are you doing this?
I hope it’s not because you want to be Linda Ikeji. Even Linda Ikeji did not know she was going to be LINDA IKEJI when she started. She did it because she loved it, it wasn’t even a big deal at the time, and I think we know the rest of that story.
The way I see it, blogging should be about adding value. I love the Internet, and I am happy to contribute to it. Here at The Kink and I, our goal is to educate, encourage and inspire, so what we hope for is for everyone that visits the blog to learn something new, see something to make you smile, feel encouraged on your individual hair journey.
Sharing your style, your recipes, curating images, your life lessons, whatever it is really that you want to blog about, do it. You writing about how you got over a rough patch in your life could be the one thing to make someone’s day. Your eyebrow tutorial may be the only thing standing between one girl somewhere and her fleek. Nothing is too small.
Because Blogging Makes You Better.
Whatever it is you want to blog about- life lessons, your Masterchef dreams, gardening, your style, your faith, let me tell you now that blogging makes you better, and this is a fact.
Blogging here, started out as an exercise in documenting my hair journey. This has expanded, but it’s still my hair diary. If you’re taking on a new project? Blog about it. It helps keep you accountable. Connects you with like minds.
If you commit to blogging as a serious habit, you are committing to developing this interest of yours in detail. You’re documenting your journey. You don’t want to post the same old same old every day, so you will find yourself thinking- how can I do this better? How can I be more creative? How can I apply myself to this subject?
Your favourite food or fashion or creative writing blog? Go back, back to their first posts. See how far they have come? How they are way better now? Chances are, your favourite fashionista did not have style when she started her blog. She liked fashion, and she was bold enough to post her outfits. There must have been inevitable faux pas, but slowly but surely, she found her style. Over time, your skill is sharpened, your voice is refined- because blog posts are evidence that you have been practicing. Practice does what it does, brings you closer to perfect. The 10,000 hour rule? Very valid.
Self-Discovery: Blogging Can Teach You Things About Yourself
In the course of blogging, I have also discovered new things about myself. Thanks to the blog, I think my eye is sharper. I edit, edit, edit- and in real life, I have to do a lot of this too. I think my blogging experience has enhanced this quality. As a hair blogger, I’ve gained perspective- I see things as a consumer, and I also see the challenges natural hair businesses face. I’m no guru, but managing requests from people seeking to promote their brands, and helping them present that to you, my audience- blogging here has definitely been an introduction to Marketing 101.
Blogging has taught me lessons in patience, and consistency. It can be a torturous process at times, but I am happy that I have been able to keep up with this. I may not have control over everything else, but I know that I can be disciplined about things if I really set my mind to it.
To teach in a classroom is one of my dreams. I am not ready to do that just yet, but for now, I can break this hair stuff down. I’m trying to ascend this corporate ladder, but I really don’t want this dream to die. Now and then, this blog reminds me that teaching, articulating ideas, making them relatable, (though not perfect), are some of the things I’m pretty good at. 🙂

I hope this series has been helpful to you. I’m still here if you have questions, but you are good now.
Start that blog! And no matter what, please (find your voice and) retain your authenticity. This is a major key. Write like yourself, Vlog like yourself. You may fall off. Sometimes, you feel burnt-out but it’s your essence (as cliched as it sounds), it’s the you-niqueness in your blog that will keep you going, and keep people coming back.
In the future, we may do more posts like this, let’s see how it goes!
Your feedback, your comments are much welcome as always. If there’s anything you’d like to add or share, go ahead!
Love,
AB,
xx

Hi Ekene,
Indeed, blogging is a wonderful creative outlet.
I’ve learned that it’s best for one’s blog to be based on a subject that they are sincerely passionate about. That way it is more enjoyable and not a struggle to keep up with updating the site with fresh content.
For example, it would be a woeful disaster if I decide to replicate Dimma’s make-up blog simply because of how successful she is, as my personal make-up routine is very basic and I don’t have the requisite in-depth knowledge of beauty products and application skills. I handle words, needles and thread much better. 😀
Thank you for sharing this series.
