The Natural Hair Industry Convention 2015

Screenshot_2015-10-29-14-38-16-1

Such a serious name, for what promises to be seriously educative, seriously fun, and seriously worth shlepping over to Maryland on Sunday, Nov 1, 2015.  It is a shame for me to say this, but I have been to a total of ONE hair meet-up. However, in recent months, I have been itching to educate myself more about this industry that we are immersed in, just by being; this industry that AB and I are so interested in. What better way for me to show my zeal than to go all out and be a part of this convention!

According to Mintel, as at 2012, the black hair industry was worth $684 Million! Did you see those numbers? MILLION! And it is anticipated that by 2017, this figure will rise to $761 Million. Side note: It is so fascinating to me when I walk into a local beauty store to find that it is run by Asians. With the rapid move and consciousness to natural hair and natural hair care, this industry is growing even more and dare I say that there is room for interested parties to pick their niches.

I am looking forward to hearing the big players in the industry speak and best believe that I shall be reporting back to you in detail. The line up of speakers include Diane Bailey of Shea Moisture, Essence China, Sabrina Boissiere, Tanya Wright (she plays Laverne Cox’s wife, Crystal, in orange is the new black!), and more!

There are only so many ways that I can express how truly excited I am to be able to attend NHIC 2015. Heck, I’m setting out at 3am to make this event! I shall definitely keep you posted and if you will be in the Baltimore area and have the money to spare, you should check this out!

Hairspiration! : Tosyn

Hey!

My name is Tosyn Bucknor and I am a wordsmith (I love to work with words). I sing, write, and also host the morning show on Top Radio 90.9 as well as vlogs and podcasts. I stay busy! I live and work in Lagos and wow, I have done that all my life although I do love to travel!

I also love experimenting with my hair, health, face, etc. So I am one to try new diets, beauty tips, etc. I once tried the lemon water thing, the no-carbs diet, and even washed my hair with coke… Yup! You can read all about that on my blog www.tosynbucknor.blogspot.com

Have you always had locs? What inspired you to get them?

I had my hair relaxed when I was in primary school, so no I have not always had locs although my dad and sister were born with natural locs. I hated salons, relaxing my hair, braiding etc. Like it took too much time and just stressed me out. Plus my hair was so tough that I could put relaxer on, sleep, wake up and it still would not have relaxed.

Hair Events in Lagos this Saturday!!

Hola lovelies!

This Saturday June 28 is not going to be an easy one for the people of Lagos.

So much buzz, plenty action, you don’t want to miss!

Naturals-in-the-city-8-new-3-01

Naturals In The City 8.

The theme for this meet-up is ‘Getting Creative’. In addition to the usual; hair talk, hair products & accessories fair, and plenty hairspiration, there’ll be a product swap (bring gently used products, not more than halfway gone, to swap for something else you may like). You could also get your hair styled right there for FREE, by people from Apples and Oranges salon, provided that your hair is washed and ready for styling.

This time though, NITC is not totally free. To get in, you’ll need a ticket and this is just going to cost you a simple Five Hundred Naira (N500) pere. Your ticket automatically enters you into a giveaway!

SO much planned, I think you want to be early. The party starts at 1:30pm! 🙂 Same old venue: Omenka Gallery, 24 Ikoyi Crescent off Osbourne Rd, Ikoyi, Lagos.

For more info, you could visit NaturalNigerian.com, or email nn@naturalnigerian.com, or holler at @NaturalNigerian on Twitter & Facebook.

Loc Appreciation Day, Lagos 2014.

Locitude in collaboration with Savvy Chic Hair Beauty Hub, and some more friends, present to you the first Loc Appreciation Day in Lagos. Join them and other loc heads in other cities round the world, as they celebrate, appreciate and educate people about dreadlocks.

This is such a great initiative, because even as the natural movement grows, dreadlocks still get a lot of flak in our society, and not nearly enough support. As a hopeful loc head (give me 5 years forreal) I wish I could be in Lagos for this, but sigh, I’m stuck miles away.

The theme of this meet is ‘Wetin Be Locs Sef?’, here’s what to expect:

–          A short video- ‘What are Locs?’

–          Panel discussion featuring Locitude, Celebrity loctician/ hair dresser Jatto, and a loc sister with waist long locs.

–          Vendors with loc products you would never have been able to find in Lagos

–          Maintenance tips

–          Styling tips

–          DIY tutorials

–          Product tips

–          Giveaways

–          And omg there’s more!

For loc love, loc conversation, loc education, loc support, inspiration, motivation and more, kindly join them ladies and gentlemen, at A White Space, Lagos. 58 Raymond Njoku street, Ikoyi. Time: 4:30- 8pm. Entry is free!

Any questions, find @Locitude on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Oya, AB. How do you suggest I divide myself into 3?

So much to do in so little time, I know.

If you’re planning to get to all 3 events, here’s how I’d do this.

Midas Naturals Pre-Launch Event, Naturals In The City 8 and then Locitude. It’s not difficult!

Have fun guys! I’m quite jealous I’m not in Lagos and I hope you make it to at least one! As always, all hair types are welcome to all 3 events!

Love,

AB,
