2. Natural Hair Friendly Salons in Nigeria.

For a while now on the blog, we’ve had a list of shops (both online and on the ground) that make natural hair friendly products available in Nigeria. The list is longer than it was when first published ^_^ and we can only expect it to get longer. Special thanks to everyone who has contributed to this, and to you as we continue to grow this list!

Many naturals world over handle their own hair, or at least most of it- not just because they can, but also because few salons are to be trusted. This page, with your help, will have as much information as possible on salons and beauty shops that are knowledgeable about natural hair care in Nigeria.

SALONS

For the purpose of this page, I’ve decided to describe salons in two ways: Natural Hair Salons & Natural Hair Friendly Salons.

Natural Hair Friendly Salons are knowledgeable about Natural Hair care but they also offer relaxer and other chemically altering services.

Natural Hair Salons on the other hand, also style relaxed hair, but will not relax or otherwise chemically alter your hair structure. They will only style the hair growing out of your scalp.

    • Hello ceemee,
Natural- Friendly Salon In Dugbe Ibadan
I served (National Youth Service) in Ibadan in 2012 and found a delightful salon with wonderful hair care practices. Though I wasn’t natural at the time, I was very impressed with his knowledge of hair care. He has very unconventional (not popular) but effective methods.
He strictly deals with the hair growing out of your head (natural or relaxed) and is trained as a trichologist. It’s called Uncle Joe at Dugbe Market. He’s at the area where soup/stew items (in Yoruba ‘nnkan obe’) are sold such as pepper, tomatoes. Everyone knows him there so just ask for the salon. Contact Nos: Uncle Joe-07065504599, Juliet-07032626756. All the best!

  2. I’ve gone to apples and oranges a few times.
I initially went to dye my hair and the main hair salon had little natural hair knowledge and no idea that they had sulfate-free shampoos. The main guys with the natural know-how and products are in the braiding room. That said, when I mentioned my issue at the reception when paying, they were very apologetic and friendly so if you go to the salon to blow-dry or dye or anything, ask them to get products from the braid section.

From subsequent visits, I can share that the braiders are knowledgeable and handled my hair without issues

    • Hey Ada, I don’t think any of the salons listed as Natural Hair Salons will give you a Jheri curl. A Jheri curl is a double chemical process. Your hair is relaxed first and then given a perm to make it curly. You could try calling them again tomorrow, preferably during their work hours.

    • Hey Christy, a Jheri Curl is a two step chemical process. The first step involves you getting a relaxer first, so none of the salons listed here as Natural Hair Salons will do that for you. You could try the salons listed as Natural Hair Friendly, or anywhere else. We don’t know 🙂

  13. The SPN (Snow’s Purely Naturelle) Salon in Abuja lack basic Customer/Client service, except you’re lucky to meet the owner who’s rarely there (Met her few times only on Saturday mornings). Such a pleasant, knowledgeable lady I must say, but unfortunately an exact opposite for her stylists and inexperienced “Manager”. Their huge staff turnover doesn’t help too, as the so-called Stylists are actually Apprentice who are merely learning, and practicing with your hair ALL the time! Anyway, I’ve long stopped going there and will try out the rest 3 natural salons in Abuja, then decide which to stick with.

    Hope my review helps…

    • You are absolutely right dear. I went there to get a twist and it was an epic fail…They are mostly apprentices there. I called them up a second time just to give them the benefit of doubt but the representative that took my call was totally uncouth and outright rude. Im NEVER going to ever bother going there even though they are 5 blocks away from my office. I will be visiting natural nation this evening to get a crotchet braids done…hopefully they will turn out better. I was impressed with how they responded to my call. Will post my update here after my visit.

Its good to see an active site. I live in Ibadan and desperate to transition. In my quest, I found Uncle Joe’s salon at dugbe however he only helps hair to grow and doesn’t really know much about natural hair/transitioning hair. Someone mentioned chelsdom and i will check it out but from the little i have gathered she sells clothes nuthin about hair. So in casr anyone knows a salon in ibadan that helps with transitioning, maintainin and growing natural hair pls and pls let us know.
