Love-Hate Thing: Mini Twists

20141027-091331-33211248

Ah. Mini twists.

In the last two, three weeks I’ve asked myself- Am I really about this life, this mini-twist life?

I just learnt to twist properly this year so, I’m still very excited about the fact that the fact that my hands can make these salon standard twists. Love.

I know this is unrealistic but, I like my hair looking like Day 1 Hair all the time. Ko poss. Impossicant. Not possible. And by day 3, I’m hating them kind of over my twists, not wanting to be seen with them. ( ._.) To my eyes, they look rough but then I reassure myself that to other people’s eyes, they look fine.

Day 5 hair.

Day 5 hair.

More often than not, I go about makeup free. But at this length, I feel like I need makeup. Something to say, no I’m not a kid- yes, my hair is deliberate! Compensating? It be like that sometimes.

Mini-twists are great for when you just don’t have the time and can’t be bothered to do your hair. I have the time, but man, I’m not in the mood to fuss over my fro. Very low maintenance! Mini twists are a very protective style, and make for super defined twist outs that last when you untwist them after some days. Like my twist out yesterday was SO bomb!

My twist out was 7 hours old in this picture. Look at that definition!

Loosened my twists after a week. My twist out was 7 hours old in this picture. High Definition!

I’m whining about it now, but I know that when I wash my hair at the end of the week, there’s a 90% chance that I’ll put my hair back in twists. LOL.

Oh well.

As I said, it’s a love-hate thing.

Over to you. What’s your love-hate thing?

Love,

AB,

xx

    • It takes me two hours tops to twist my entire head. I twist while watching TV so I’m not really aware of the effort. When my elbows start to protest, I stretch. If it hurts too much I imagine I’d just stop and rest, continue later.

      • Two hours for a style that you don’t have to touch for a week? #winning!

I tried mini-twists once and I feel your pain about your day one hair looking the best. It’s hard to resist the urge to do something to your hair, but at the end of the day—that’s what this protective styling life is all about right?

Do you apply anything to your ends to prevent the frizzes?

  1. Seriously, I love your twist. Initially I wondered why my twist didn’t look this great, but as my hair grew I realized it had to do with the volume – so it’s gradually getting there. I love it when I twist myself, the only challenge is that when I get to the middle I get tired and the size becomes bigger. I think I’ll be a bit patient (my sista, e no easy jor…I dey do hair my boys (3) dey give me wahala – motherhood tinz)!

  2. Seriously, this was me about 6 weeks ago. And save for a week hiatus to play with my free hair, I’ve been reinstalling the mini twists every two weeks; I wear them for a week and then rock the twist out the second week. By the end of the second week it’s pretty much a big curly fro that I adore so much. The best thing about these twists is that they’re so low maintenance and they stay moisturized without me even having to try. But I won’t lie, they make me look way younger than I really like so I almost only endure the twists stage patiently waiting till week two. Still, I’ve pretty much found a style I can rock during long periods when I’m not in the mood to fuss with my hair but I don’t want to install a long term protective style that lasts a month or over.

  3. Your twists are gorgeous and of course so is the twist-out. I have only ever done really small mini twists once. My hair is super fine so after a few days I noticed hairs that sort of “slip out” of the twists making it look fuzzy..not frizz just…messy for lack of a better word. I think I had mine in for 2 weeks and then took them down. I kept redoing a few at the top and places people could see but what I disliked was the installing an take down (it was my first time and took forever to install!) Anyways yours look great yes on day 5 too!

  4. At first, I hated my mini twists but after awhile I began to love it. I have my days as well that I am over it! But when I get days off from dealing with my hair I realize how great this style is! Also, I like to style it different ways…I love the mini twist out even more, but seem to have more tangles for some reason, I guess because the twists are so small!
    -Anyway, I love your twists!

  6. Worra you talking bout?? Your day 5 twists look awesome! I love twists for the convenience. Oddly enough I like putting them in, but I hate the take down.
    And that twistout… ♡

  7. Your twists are so nice and the twist out is fire! I’m on the verge of giving up on mini twists because 1. They don’t look so great with my length 2. I don’t have a lot of hair density-wise so my twists tend to be thin with too much space in between(scanty) 3. When I go to bed they contort themselves into very awkward upright positions 4. My hair shrinks ridiculously once water touches it so if I attempt to moisturise my twists, they become so short and stubby and I end up taking them out. The 2 times I have done twists, I pinned them/put them in a pony tail through out cos of the reasons above.

  8. One of the best thing about mini twists are that ultra defined twist out you get at the end of it all. I make mind last an entire week and it always gets better with age. The worst thing about mini twists is having to redo pants if you want to stop them from getting raggedy… there’s always a price to pay for looking fabulous.

  9. The twists and twist out are fine oh❤️ what does twist them with? I have only mini twists once and there were not ‘coils’ after oh😢

  10. Those twists are so pretty looking though, I think they look best on hair that’s not too long because its easier t see the swirly pattern of the twists. The twist-out is bomb too! I find I get obssessed with a style and wear it for a month, until I get bored and try something else. Like September was my month of wash n goes, august was my three strand twist month and august has been my bun month. Hopefully next month will be protective style month 😀

My love-hate thing? Washing my hair, I love the beginning again feeling, like my hair is full of possibilities, but i’ve increasingly discovered that I don’t like getting wet at all. Not my face, or scalp, or even my hands when i’ve got product in it. It’s all just….ew ahhahaa, thats probably why i’ve been trying styles that don’t take too long.

  11. My love hate thing is washing my hair. My hair shrinks and tangles badly once it comes in contact with water. I love twists but installing them is the problem. My 6months baby won’t play by himself for 15mins talk more of 2hours while I install twists. Yours look fab. I love them

  12. Your twists are gorge tho… your hair is really full and I guess your strands are thick. People like me do twists and the SPACE between each twist is just too real… *sigh*.. Anyway, looking forward to more pictures from the calabar meet up ^_^

  13. I haven’t worn mini twists in years! I have no patience for them unless i am keeping them in for 3-4 weeks. I also struggle with feeling the need to supplement the look with something else (statement earrings, make up, flowers, headbands)… They look great on you though! Great natural protective style 🙂

  14. I love mini twist! They are my go to style when I’m not wearing my hair in braids or weaves. I used to get them done at salons before and rock for about 2-3 weeks but salons have become so pricey these days.
Anyway last weekend, I twisted my hair with the mind of rocking a twist out the next day but by the time I was done, the mini twists looked so good that I couldn’t bring myself to take them out. Rocked the style for 4 days before my scalp started being a cry baby and I had to wash. I’m so excited that I can install my own twists almost as perfectly as yours AB and I’m going to try it again this weekend. 😊
